Why Does My Blush Always Look Blotchy?

Why Does My Blush Always Look Blotchy?

When using blush it’s a product that can certainly compliment the skins complexion by giving it a natural radiance, but like any product it’s not perfect which can cause some problems. A common problem that can occur is that your blush can look blotchy throughout the entire day, which can make your skin appear unflattering and from a distance you can look as if you have some skin problems.

So, why does your blush always look blotchy? Well, there are a number of reasons, the main reason is that you need to have a skincare regime in order to make sure that your skin is moisturized regularly, using a simple primer can help smooth out your skin which will help to prevent any kind of blotchiness from occurring.

Not Having The Correct Skin Care

The first reason why your blush may not be applying smoothly is because it may simply boil down to your skin’s texture.  If the texture on the skins surface is dry, it can cause blotchiness for your makeup once applied on top of such texture.

When blush is applied on dry flakey skin it will apply uneven and look blotchy throughout the day. This can be controlled through the correct skincare routine, If the skin is dry and flakey it’s an indication that the skin is dry and needs hydration.

When it comes to dry skin it’s important to make sure your skincare is very hydrating so that the moisture is restored back into the skin. This will create a smooth canvass for your skin so that your blush applies smoother.

A basic skin care routine for dry skin would be:

Weekly exfoliation: Dry skin types should always exfoliate the face 1-2 times a week. This will help remove any texture that may be sitting on top of skin’s surface. By exfoliating the skin it exposes more fresher and radiant  skin that under the surface of the dead skin.

Weekly facemasks: Is placed on top of cleansed skin for approximately 10-20mins.  This step deep cleans the pores and helps hydrate and restore moisture in the skin.

Daily cleanser: Should be used everyday to cleanse the skin.  Cleansers for drier skin types can be cream cleansers.  Cream cleansers help hydrate the skin rather than stripping it of its natural moisture while keeping the skin clean of any dirt and oils.

Toner: A toner for dry skin types should be used daily so it can restore the hydration while also conditioning the skin. It helps remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin while conditioning it.

Face serum: Should be applied before applying any moisturizers. A face serum will help sink in your moisturizer deep within the skin.

Daily Moisturizer: Should be applied everyday to keep the skin hydrated all day. Moisturizers for dry skin are usually more thicker which provides more hydration.

Having such a skin care routine will help treat and hydrate dry and flakey skin types which will help create a smooth surface for your makeup to easily be applied on top of.

Using A Primer

After the right skincare routine has been implemented, another way to prevent your blush from blotching is by using a primer under your makeup. Face primers help smooth out skin textures such as large pores and fine lines. The purpose of face primers is to allow makeup such as blush to apply on smoother and last longer. Primers help the makeup grab on to the skin which helps it last longer.

Use The Right Makeup Formulation

When it comes to formulation of the foundation it plays a part on how your other makeup will apply on top of it. If the formulation of the foundation is oil based and a powdered blush is applied on top of it, this will cause it to separate and cause blotchiness. It’s important to make sure your foundation formulation is the same as your blush.  Two separate formulations mixed together can cause the makeup to separate.  This is where its important to know your skin type and what compliments it.

For normal to combination skin: The right foundation would be liquid and cream formulations, so the blush applied to the skin should only be liquid and cream formulations

Oily skin types: Should wear foundations at matte formulations and wear blushes that are matte or powder finishes.

Dry skin types: Should be wearing foundations that are liquid and cream and should wear blushes that are liquid and cream formulations.

Quality Of Blush

The quality of a blush is important, the way a blush swatch will help you determine how the blush will apply on the skin.  My personal experience with bad quality blush is that it is difficult to swatch. These types of blushes usually have a hard-thin layer on top of the blush making it difficult to swatch. Avoid “frosted” formulations because they have more larger glitter pigments which tend to go on uneven and patchy.

These types of blushes are usually low in quality and won’t apply evenly and smooth on the skin. A bad quality blush usually wont last that long on the skin either. The best way to determine what a good quality blush is, is to swatch it on your arm by using your finger. If the swatch is solid and very pigmented and not patchy then this formulation is considered a better quality.

Blending Your Blush

How you blend your blush is an important step, this can determine the overall look of the blush throughout the day. If your blending powdered blush then the best way to blend this type of a blush is with a blush brush.  This allows the blush to apply more evenly and smoothly on the skin.

For cream and liquid blushes you can use a buffing brush because the bristles will buff in the blush into the skin. For liquid and cream blushes a beauty blender will help press the product into the skin. When liquid and cream foundations are blended with a beauty blender it helps melt the product into the skin which allows it to apply smoother.

It’s really important to make sure you use a damp beauty blender or even a damp sponge it will prevent any blotchiness. This will help give an even application, If a dry sponge is used to blend out the blush it will take off more makeup, which you then apply and the blush will go on unevenly on the skin.

Try Long Lasting Formulations

Sometimes the reason why your blush may be blotchy is because the formulation may not be long lasting. Always look at the labels before buying blush, because if it says it’s a long lasting formulation then its worth looking into. Long lasting formulations will stay on the skin longer throughout the day.

Some formulations to consider are looking at cheek stains, these are known to last longer on the cheeks through out the day. The great thing about cheek stains is once it’s blended into the skin it will settle into the skin and wont budge all day. Read this article I wrote that will help you on how to make my blush last all day it will give you a few ways on helping your blush last alot more longer.

7. Set The Make Up

Your makeup may just need to be set in order to prevent any blotchiness, there are two ways of setting the makeup:

One is with a translucent powder which helps absorb any oils that may surface on the skin. Translucent powders also help keep your makeup in place so it doesn’t move around through out the day. This can prevent blotchiness from occurring.

The second way to set the makeup is by using a setting spray. This can be applied even after using a setting powder.  Setting sprays usually help mold the makeup on the face come together. When a setting spray is applied to the face it makes your makeup budge proof and allows it to stay in place all day. By adding this to your makeup routine it could help prevent your blush from looking blotchy.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there are many reasons as to why your blush may appear blotchy.  It can vary from your skin’s texture to the formulation of the product. It’s important to create the perfect canvass for your makeup to apply through a simple hydrating skincare regime. This can make a huge difference in how your overall makeup will apply. Moreover, important to also consider the formulations of blushes because this can change the way your blush applies.

Also, It’s really important to consider the right tools to blend out the blush. The application of the blush will determine how the blush will look through out the day which can prevent any blotchiness.  Lastly, its wise to always set the makeup either with a translucent powder or with a setting spray, this will keep your blush intact all day without it looking blotchy.
