Why Does My Makeup Break Up On My Face?

When it comes to applying makeup on your face the pet peeve of mine is looking into a mirror later on in the day, only to find that the foundation has begun to separate.  It makes your skin look uneven and unattractive.  There are many reasons as to why your foundation may be breaking up and separating on the face. I have discovered a few reasons as to why this may occur through my own journey when applying makeup on a daily basis.

So, Why does my makeup break up on my face?

  1. Not having a proper skin care regime- which helps create a smooth and perfect canvass for makeup application
  2. Not wearing a foundation primer
  3. Applying too many layers of product
  4. Wearing the incorrect formulation
  5. Not setting the foundation with a translucent powder
  6. Not setting the foundation with a setting spray

#1. Skincare

Applying skin care requires you to know your skin type. If your using the wrong skincare for your skin type this can cause many effects how your makeup wears throughout the day.  There should be a basic skin care regime that should be implemented daily.  The first thing to  know is your skin type;

Normal to combination skin: This particular skin type is dry on the cheeks and more oily on the t-zone. This skin type needs to find the right pH level for it to be balanced.

Dry skin:  Can usually be flakey and have a tight feeling.  This skin type can be more sensitive. Dry skin types need moisturizing skin care products that are more rich in order to hydrate the skin.  It important to keep dry skin hydrated so that makeup is applied on it correctly

Oily skin:  Is when the skin is oily all over.  Oily skin types usually get oily after a couple of hours after being washed. This particular skin type needs skin care to help control the oil secretion.  Its really important to know if your skin type is oily because this can effect how your foundation will go on.

Weekly exfoliation: Its important to exfoliate the face because this will remove any dead skin cells that may sitting on top of the skin. This will help reduce any skin texture and reveal a more smoother skin texture that may be sitting on the bottom.  This should be done at least twice a week.

Daily face cleanser: Will help cleanse the skin daily from any dirt or oils that may be lingering on the skin. Its important to  cleanse your skin daily.

Toning the skin: Helps remove any dirt and oils that may be deep within in the pores. Toners deep clean the skin more than a daily cleanser allowing other skin care products to absorb into the skin better.

Moisturizing the skin:  It’s very important to hydrate the skin so that the skins texture remains smooth and healthy. Its important to wear the correct moisturizer for your skin type. If you wear the wrong  moisturizer it can add too much or too little oils to skin which will effect your makeup.  Too much hydration on the skin can make your makeup slip and slide off.  If there is too little hydration it can cause your makeup to flake.  Therefore, its important to wear the right makeup on the skin.

It’s important to make sure your moisturizer absorbs into the skin  rather than sits on top of the skin because this will  definitely  effect the way the makeup applies on the skin.

If makeup is applied right away it can cause your makeup to break off because the moisturizer will still be sitting on the surface of the skin and will cause the formulation of the foundation to change causing it to break apart. When moisturiser is applied to the skin it takes about 10-15 mins for it to sink into the skin. Its best to wait for it to sink into the skin and then apply primers and foundation to the skin.

#2. Always Apply A Face Primer

One of the main reasons why makeup does separate on the face is because there was no face primer applied under the foundation.   When applying foundation to the face its important to apply  face primer under the your foundation it allows your makeup to have more longevity.  Face primer allows your foundation to adhere to the skin and evens out skin textures such as fine lines and enlarged pores. Sometimes if we don’t wear a foundation primer it can settle into textured skin causing the foundation to unevenly be spread onto the skin causing the foundation to crack off the skin.

For oily skin types: Look at primers that are more on the mattifying side which will help reduce the secretion of oils which would then prevent the foundation from slipping or settling  in one section of the face.

For dry skin types: look at primers that are more on a dewy side to give the skin more of a hydrated look.  If a mattifying primer is applied to dry skin it could further dry out the skin. When foundation is then applied to the skin it could cause it to break off or flake off.

Its really important to apply face primers that will help compliment your formulation of your foundation.  Therefore, when applying a water-based primer always make sure that the foundation is also water based so that it blends into the skin well.

A silicone based primer should be used with a silicone based primer so that you get the best finish for your skin. This again will allow your primer and foundation to work beautifully together because of they have the same type of ingredients.

#3. Applying Too Many Layers

Another reason as to why your foundation may be  breaking up on your face is because there  could simply be a lot of layers of product applied to the skin. Its really important that when we layer  product on the skin  that we blend it in one layer at a time with a beauty blending sponge.

Beauty blending sponges apply makeup on the skin in layers by thinning out the formulation of the makeup.  Sometimes when we apply makeup to the skin the layers may not be evenly distributed on the face with a makeup brush this too may cause your makeup to break off.

# 4. Wearing The Wrong Foundation Formula

Another reason as to why your foundation may be breaking off is because you may be wearing the wrong formulation of foundation.  Our skin types usually have certain foundations that compliment them.

Normal to combination skin types: Should look at wearing liquid and cream formulations. The formulation of the foundation should also state its for this particular skin type because it will help balance the pH levels of the skin type out.

Oily skin types: Oily skin types should look at more mattifying and matte foundations such as powders. Foundations that have a matte or powder finish is suitable for this skin type because it will help absorb any excess oils on the skin.  If an oily skin type applies too much of hydrating formula to the skin this will definitely cause the foundation to break apart on the skin.

Dry skin types: This skin type would require a foundation that has more hydration in it. Most liquid and cream foundations that have 24H hydration in them usually hydrate the skin.   Avoid matte formulations when it comes to dry skin types because this may cause the skin to dry out further causing the foundation to flake off causing the foundation to flake off.

Why does my makeup go patchy

There are a few reasons as to why makeup would look patchy. The first reason would be because of the skin’s texture. It’s always a good idea to keep your skin hydrated.  When the skin isn’t hydrated the texture on the skin can be accentuated when makeup is applied on top, It’s really important to have hydrated skin so that your makeup applies more smoothly. This would require more water to by drunk during the day and to have a suitable skin care regime.

Another reason as to why your foundation could look patchy is because of the different formulations of makeup being used. When using a water-based primer its important to stick with the same formulation through out the makeup routine such as wearing a water- based primer with a water-based foundation.  By using a different formulation of foundation on top of the water-based primer it could cause the foundation to separate.

#5. Setting The Foundation With Translucent Powders:

Its really important to remember that when applying foundation to the face that the translucent powders are applied after the liquid or cream foundations. If its applied before this can cause the foundation to look cakey and separate and look like a hot mess.

Translucent powders: The first way to keep your foundation in tac with a translucent powder. Translucent powders are usually more fine and when applied to the skin  don’t usually have a color pay off.  The purpose of these types of powders is to set the foundation and keep everything in place.

Translucent powders make your foundation last longer by absorbing any excess oils so that your foundation doesn’t slide around and crack off. When it comes to applying translucent powders to the skin make sure you stipple the translucent powder into the skin.

#6. Using Setting Sprays To Set The Foundation

Setting sprays are also another way to keep your foundation in tac and last even longer.  By using a setting spray it will mold the makeup look together and will get your foundation lasting longer on the skin.  By avoiding this last step it would be like not sealing the fresh look together.

The great thing about setting sprays is that they also help mattify the overall makeup look which will help with any excess oils that may break up the foundation.

Conclusion

when it comes to you foundation there can be different reasons as to why it may break up on your face. The one thing to remember is that the skin type you have. Once the skin type is determined this will help keep the skin well balanced. For drier skin types its important to look at more ways of hydrating the skin.

Furthermore, oily skin types its important to look at products that are more mattifying so that the oil secretion is more controlled. Before applying any makeup its wise to have a certain skin care regime for your skin type which would include cleansing, toning and moisturizing the skin.  Always allow the moisturizer to sink into the skin for at least 10-15 mins before applying any makeup so that the makeup doesn’t mix in with the moisturizer causing it to change the formulation to being more oily.

Next, always wear a foundation primer, this will help smooth out any fine lines, wrinkles and large pores so that the foundation doesn’t settle into them.  Foundation primers also create a great surface for your foundation to adhere to the skin so it lasts longer.  When it comes to longer lasting foundations a more matte foundation would be more longer lasting because  it helps absorb the oils  and it keeps the skin more dry.

It’s important to look at what foundation formulations would suit your skin type.  A more mattifying and a powder finish to foundations is what will make it last longer.  Furthermore, it’s a good idea to apply a translucent powder on top of the foundation in a gentle stippling motion, this will keep the foundation in tack and will absorb and excess oils that would perhaps cause the foundation from setting on the skin and coming off.

Lastly, it’s a good idea to set the foundation in place with a setting spray, this will seal your foundation into place preventing it form budging, smudging , moving around and coming off.
