Your eyeshadow is one of those products that can really enhance your eyes, they help enhance your eye shape by giving it more depth and character it can help bring together an overall makeup look through loose pigments and pressed pigments. There is nothing worse than putting in all this work towards your eye makeup to find out that your eyeshadow didn’t last throughout the day and it just disappeared. This was a common theme with myself when I first started wearing makeup. I always wondered how eyeshadows and eye make up always stayed on for models and celebrities that I saw in magazines.
So I kept asking myself why does my eyeshadow disappear? Well there are a few ways that can make your eyeshadow disappear and a few ways to help it stay on as I mention below
- Using concealers to help keep eyeshadow long-lasting
- Applying eyeshadow primers to help keep the eyeshadow on longer
- Using cream colored base to keep the eyeshadow on
- Trying new formulations
- Powdering the eye area
- How to prevent your glitter eyeshadow from disappear
- Using a setting spray to keep your eyeshadow on longer
There are a few reasons why your eyeshadow may be disappearing off your eyelid. It could be because there is no base for the eyeshadow to stick to, or the formulations of the eyeshadow could be wrong for your skin type.

Tip#1 Using Concealers
One reason why your eyeshadow may disappear off your eyelids is that there is no base for the eyeshadow to stay on. Sometimes when eyeshadow pigments are applied directly to the eyelid without a base, overtime the eyeshadow will most likely crease or fade off because of the oils or simply because of the formulation of the eye shadow. The eyeshadow may require a base underneath it so it can stay on longer and not disappear.
When I first began to take make up classes for makeup artistry the one tip that was taught to us was using concealer as a base for eyeshadow applications.
The first step is to apply a cream concealer all over the eyelid. By applying concealer all over the lid it creates the perfect base and covers up any dark circles and pigmentation around the eye area.
The second step is to apply either a powder formulation of a foundation or a base color on top of the eyelid. This will absorb any oils around the eyelid which may have been eating away at your eyeshadow.
The third step is to apply an eyeshadow pigment on top of the eyelid. This entire trick will help your eyeshadow apply smoother and last longer throughout the entire day.
Tip #2 Applying Eyeshadow Primers
Another reason why your eyeshadow may disappear is that the eyelids weren’t primed. If the eyeshadow pigment isn’t showing up on the eyelids properly it could be a reason why the eyeshadow is disappearing.
The second reason is that it could be because the eyeshadow has nothing to stick onto so it’s more likely to fade off and disappear throughout the day.
A great thing about eyeshadow primers is that it helps your eyeshadow last longer and makes your eyeshadow more vibrant. If the pigment is a loose pigment an eyeshadow primer will help the pigmentation stick to the primer. Some eyeshadow primers can determine the finish of an eyeshadow.
For example, Urban Decays Primer Potion, the original formulation will help keep the eyeshadow in place while keeping the eyeshadows original formulation to stay in place. This eyeshadow primer will help brighten up the original color of the eyeshadow giving it more vibrancy.
Another way to keep your eyeshadow primer on that will help change the formulation of eyeshadow is a primer that would have a shimmer. These types of eyeshadow primers help bring out the shimmer of any eyeshadow while adding vibrancy and giving it longevity.
A good primer that would work well with adding vibrancy to your eyeshadow is the Urban Decay Primer Potion
If your looking for a primer that can add shimmer to your finished eyebrow would be the Urban decay primer potion in sin
Tip#3 Using A Cream Colored Base
A third reason why your eyeshadow may disappear is that the color may not be coming through and again because there is no base for the eyeshadow to stick onto. An eyeshadow base is usually like a cream eyeshadow that can come in a variety of colors. By using an eyeshadow cream-colored base under the eyeshadow it will help pop the color of the eyeshadow because the base is usually darker and will create a darker canvass for the eyeshadow to pop.
Cream shadow bases usually stay put once they are placed on the skin making the formulation smudge-proof. By placing pigment on top of this type of a base it will help your eyeshadow show pop up and stay put all day.
How to use a cream-colored base as a primer:
Step 1: Apply the eyeshadow cream color all over the lid
Step 2: Apply desired eyeshadow all over the lid
A great example for the kind of base you can use is the MAC’s Pro Longwear Paint Pot
Tip#4 Trying Different Eyeshadow Formulations
At times the reason why eyeshadows may disappear is due to the types of formulations. Some of the formulations out there can be really greasy and have the tendency to almost wipe off the lid. Other times some eyeshadows are more on the translucent side and don’t have much of a color pay of which can be difficult to apply to the eyelid.
In such circumstances, it’s best to look at long-lasting formulations with eyeshadows. Long-lasting eyeshadow formulations usually go as a wet or cream formulation and once it is set it won’t budge. A lot of these formulations won’t crease either. A lot of these eyeshadows are highly pigmented which means there is a great color pay off.
Some great examples of these types of eyeshadows are Maybelline Color Tattoo and Stila Magnificent Metals.
Tip# 5 Preventing The Eyelids From Becoming Oily
One of the main reasons why eyeshadows may disappear from the eyelids is that the eyelids are always oily. The oiliness from the eyelids makes it difficult for eyeshadows to stay on because it eats away at the eyeshadow and makes the eyeshadow disappear throughout the day. Therefore, its best to find different ways to stop the eyelids from being oily.
The first way to prevent the eyelids from being oily is by avoiding applying any moisturizer on the eyelids ie. eye creams. Eye creams can cause the eyelids from becoming very oily and greasy. You can avoid applying eye cream or any moisturizer around the eye area.
If applying an eye cream around the eyelid area is something that cant be done then another trick is applying a translucent powder around the eyelid and the under-eye area. This will help absorb any oils around the eyelid area and under the eye area. This will help keep the eyeshadow on longer without the oils eating away at it.
Step 1: Apply translucent powder all over the eyelid with an eyeshadow brush
Step 2: Apply an eyeshadow primer on the eyelid
Step 3: Apply desired eyeshadow to the eyelid
Tip.#6 How do you keep glitter eyeshadow from falling off
One of the types of eyeshadows that always seemed to be disappearing from my eyelids was glitter eyeshadows. These types of eyeshadows are the most stubborn type of eyeshadows to stick on to the eyelid.
The glitter particles always seem to disappear and never seem to be on the eyelid by the end of the day. A normal eyeshadow primer won’t keep these types of eyeshadows on the lid. It’s better to look at glitter eyeshadow primers which keep the glitter eyeshadows in place all day and all night.
These types of eyeshadow primers are specifically made for glitter eyeshadow pigments and can be used for other glitter makeup. When a glitter primer is applied under a glitter pigment it is tackier and allows the glitter to adhere to the skin much better than a regular glitter eyeshadow primer.
There is a good eyeshadow primer two-faced glitter glue glitter shadow primer is something that would be a good choice for helping you keep your glitter eyeshadow on day and night.
Tip#7 Using a setting spray to keep your eyeshadow on longer
Another way to make your eyeshadow more pigmented and prevent it from disappearing is by applying a setting spray with your eyeshadow. At times the formulation of the eyeshadow may disappear quickly due to the formulation of the eyeshadow.
By adding some makeup setting spray to an eyeshadow brush and dipping it into the eyeshadow will give the eyeshadow more intensity. A setting spray can even turn the eyeshadow into a liquid liner. Setting sprays usually are used to set makeup but can also transform pigmentation into a high-intensity pigment. This is a great way to get your eyeshadow to stay on while having an intensified pigmented eyeshadow.
This trick can be used in combination with an actual eyeshadow primer.
There are a few setting sprays that would work well but I do recommend that you try out Urban Decay’s All Nighter Setting Spray
In conclusion, there are several reasons why an eyeshadow may disappear from your eyelids. Its always best to prep the eyelids before applying any eyeshadow on it. The oils from the eyelids can eat away at the eyeshadow causing it to disappear. In order for eyeshadow to last longer is by adding a translucent powder to absorb oils all over the eyelids, its best then to apply a primer or a base for the eyeshadow apply all over the eyelid.
Once the eye primer is applied all over the eyelid this will allow the eyeshadow to stick to the eyelid which prevents the eyeshadow from creasing and fading off. Eyeshadow primers also help brighten up the eyeshadow pigmentation.
