Prepping The Skin With The Correct Skin Care

In order to make your foundation to last all day the number one thing you have to consider is prepping your skin with the correct skin care. The correct skin care creates the right surface to work with when applying makeup. It can determine the longevity of makeup for example if you’re using the wrong skin care for your skin and your skin is secreting more oils that it should it can make your makeup slide off or if the wrong products dry out your skin it can make your skin have more texture due to the dryness.  There are basic skin regimes we need to educate ourselves with in order to create the perfect canvass.

There are three main skin types to keep in mind it’s very important to determine which skin type you are:

Normal/Combination skin types: if you have normal to combination skin you will find that your skin is oily in the t-zone area and dry on the cheeks. In order to treat normal skin types, it’s important to find products that can help balance the skins pH levels. It’s important to make sure products are categorized in the normal in the combination skin with cleansers, toners, and moisturizers.

Oily skin types: if you have oily skin type you will find that your skin is always oily and shiny and most likely to be prone to acne due to the amount of secretion of the skin glands. For oily skin types its important to find products that help the skin produce less oil.  It’s important to use products that are specifically made of oily skin types such as the cleansers, toners, and moisturizers because these products will know how to treat oily skin types. When it comes to making up its best to stick to makeup that is powdered formulation.

Dry skin types/sensitive skin: if you have dry skin your skin usually produces less sebum than normal skin types. The skin usually feels more dry and rough and is also more common with more mature skin types.  It’s important to treat dry skin types to prevent aging. With dry skin types if it’s not treated it can be flakey and itchy if not treated making it sensitive.

Once you’re able to determine your skin type and apply the appropriate skin care products it will help to create a smooth and even canvas for makeup application.

Below are products that I recommend for various skin types hopefully they will work for you…

Moisturizer: Day Wear  Multi Protection for 24 Hour Moisture Crème Oil Free with an SPF 25.  This moisturizer doesn’t have any oils in its formulation to make the skin more oily.  Its formula will help keep the skin hydrated and at the same time help control the oil production.

It’s also good to remember to exfoliate the skin at least once or twice a week in order to remove any dead skin cells that may be sitting on the surface of the skin. If the skin isn’t exfoliated then the correct moisture will not be delivered to the skin making it difficult for the surface of the skin to be smooth.

Once the skin is treated accordingly and has a smooth surface to work with we can start to look at how to make the makeup last longer.

Face Primers

Applying a face primer before makeup application has many benefits such as making your makeup apply smoother and last even longer all day. Therefore, it can make the foundation you love that isn’t long wearing last even longer if worn with a face primer.   Makeup primers are also good at smoothing out the surface of the skin by minimizing pores and fine lines. There are two types of finishes face primers provide which is a dewy and matte finish. Primers usually come in two formulations which is a cream and a gel-based formulation.

Depending on the type of finish you are looking at for face primers can help achieve that look. There are two types of finishes face primers come in which is a luminous finish which gives the skin a more dewy hydrated look which is ideal for more mature skin or dry skin that needs that bit of glow.

The second type of primer is a matte finish, this type of finish works out better for oily skin types and for photography pictures.  A mattifying primer helps control the oils in our skin which is beneficial for oily skin types.  Face primers can solve many skin care concerns when it comes to the application of foundation and skin care concerns and textures.

Estee Lauder has both a luminous (dewy finish) primer and matte finish primer. With the Estee Lauder line, there are three types of primers that have different purposes

Mattifier shines control perfecting primer + Finisher: works well for oily skin types and helps reduce shine for oily skin.  It also helps keep your makeup on all day. This can be worn alone or underneath makeup.

The Illuminator Radiant Perfecting Primer + Finisher: Gives the skin a more hydrated luminous look along with making it last all day as well.

The Smoother Universal Perfecting Primer is a face primer that helps minimize pores and fine lines.

There are some face primers that have color correcting colors to help even out skin complexion along with providing the benefits of a primer. For example, a green colored passed primer would be good at canceling out any redness that the skin can have.  A more apricot colored primer would even out the skin tone. Therefore, any dark spots or darker colored veins will be easier to cancel out. When choosing a color corrective base we have to keep in mind the color wheel we learned in art class. Green is the opposite of red so it can cancel out any redness on the skin and apricot(peachy) color cancels out blue, green and purple colors because the color peach is made up of those colors opposite of the color wheel.

How To Make Your Foundation Last All Day Without A Primer

If your not a fan of using an actual primer to keep your foundation in place all day another alternative can be a cream foundation base. When I was in school one of the tricks to do makeup was by using a cream foundation as a base. This formulation went on pretty thick and was full coverage.  This base had a multi-purpose use you could use it on the eyelids as a primer for eyeshadow or concealer.

The one that was recommended to us at the time was MAC’s Full Coverage Foundation. This foundation is long wearing and has multiple purposes.  Once the cream foundation was used we usually applied setting powder to keep the foundation into place.  This is where MAC’s Studio fix powder came into place and set the foundation base and absorbed any shine or excess oils.  This is a trick worth trying because the formulation of the base can do wonder on the skin along with lasting long all day on the skin.

Long Lasting Formulations

Usually, long-wearing foundations have best-staying power than the regular everyday foundation. Long wearing foundations usually work well during photography. A lot of them claim to be 18-24hours long lasting.  I personally found that long wearing foundations have a matte finish which does make it work out for photography.

I also found that long wearing foundations are usually smudged proof once applied to the skin and that most formulations are oil free which prevents the product from smearing off.  This means when applied to the skin on top of a primer you will find it sets into the skin quickly, therefore, you have to work with this formulations very fast. It’s really important with a long-wearing foundation to determine what coverage you want.

For example, if you’re just looking for a foundation that is full coverage or a light coverage foundation. A full coverage long lasting foundation usually works best with photography whereas if you just want to wear light makeup to make the skin look even all over a more lightweight formula would be ideal for everyday use.  Keep in mind that most of the formulation for these types of foundations usually are oil free and are water resistant.

Estee Lauders Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup – is a foundation that comes in all undertones. It’s a highly rated foundation that doesn’t transfer and is medium to full coverage.  The formulation is non-transferable it lasts pretty much all day once it is set.  This foundation also works really well in hot humid weather conditions and won’t clog the pores.

Double Wear Stay in Place Makeup- is a powder based foundation that is also long lasting in its formulation. It’s used to set liquid foundations. The formula is also oil-free and it’s medium to full coverage.  It can be used on its own depending on what type of finish you’re looking for.

What Is Setting Powder Used For

Setting powders usually, come in two forms one being an actually pressed powder the other being a fine mild powder also know as translucent powders.  Powders usually help eliminate any oils in a product which helps with the lasting power of a product.  Powders usually help set the final look of makeup and can help minimize and blur fine lines and pores in a finished makeup look. Lastly, a good setting powder helps to reduce the production of oils on the skin which helps keep your makeup on longer.

When applying a powder to set a foundation I found using a big powder brush works best because the truth is that you don’t need a lot of product to set your foundation in place it’s always wise to use a light hand. I personally found that applying a with a light hand when it comes to setting the foundation the areas that should be focused on are the oiliest parts of the face such as the T-zone.  This is the best technique for everyday makeup.

However, when applying setting powders to specific features of the face then its best to use the brush best suited for that area of the face. For example, if you have oily eyelids that cause your eye makeup to smudge off all the time the best thing to do is use a fluffy eye makeup brush to apply the setting powder on that area of the face.

What Is The Difference Between A Setting Powder And A Translucent Powder

When it comes to a setting powder I found that this type of powder is usually the same color as your foundation and allows you to set the foundation into place. It usually has sheer coverage and has more color to it which still gives your skin a healthy look and comes in a pressed powder formulation.  Whereas a translucent powder is usually more of a loose formulation and blends into your skin. It usually has a white color and once it’s blended into the skin it pretty much goes on transparent.

Translucent powder can be used after your setting powder and focuses more on fixing the texture of the skin so, for example, it will help blur our fine lines bumpiness and large pores.  After application of translucent powder, you will find that it usually swept off the face to avoid a cakey look.  A tip in avoiding a white cast over the look with translucent powder is to go back in gently with your actual setting powder to bring back the color to the skin.  Lastly, translucent powders are also known to set the makeup under the eyes as a technique known as baking.

How To Make Your Concealer Last Longer

When it comes to applying concealer most of the time it’s bound to crease due to the fine lines around the eyes and because of the oils. I found two main solutions to make your concealer last all day. One would be applying a long wearing concealer which usually is full coverage and usually doesn’t budge due to its formulation.

Good examples of these concealers are Tarte’s shape tape or Estee Lauders Double Wear Concealer. The second tip would be by setting the concealer with a translucent powder. This will reduce any oil production on the skin keeping it oil-free and will help blur out any fine lines.  A common in setting the under eye make up is known as baking.

What Is Baking Makeup

Baking is a common technique used to set concealer under the eyes. This technique also helps brighten the under eye area. It smooths out any texture that may be under the eye area and also any fine lines that cause creasing to disappear.  Baking includes the process of applying concealer to the eye area and then applying a translucent powder with a heavy hand on top of the concealer.

Once the translucent powder is placed on the skin it’s a good idea to let it sit there for a few mins as it will infuse with the concealer to make a creaseless under eye area where your makeup won’t come off. Here are a few steps to go by when baking:

  • moisturize the eye area with an eye cream- you want the canvass of the eye area to be as smooth as possible so that there is no flaking on the skin
  • Use a long wearing concealer such as double wear conceal by Estee Lauder and apply under the eyes and blend it out
  • With a damp sponge dip the sponge into a translucent powder such as Airspun and gently dab it on top of the eye area where you used the concealer
  • Do the rest of your makeup and allow the translucent powder to sit on top of your skin and “bake” and then sweep off with a large fluffy brush
  • To avoid any flashback in the eye area go in with a pressed powder like MAC studio fix foundation and gently dab under the eye area

How To Make Your Blush Last Longer

Applying blush to your make up look makes your makeup look usually adds a  natural healthy glow to the skin.  A problem that I always encountered with applying blush was it never seemed to have stayed longer on my skin.  It always seemed to either fade away or disappear within a few hours of application.  After doing some research on blushes I realized that there were a few things  I was doing wrong.  There are three types of blushes being powder, cream and gel formulations.

When it came to powder blushes I found that it was important to look at highly pigmented blushes that really distributed the product all over the skin. A formulation that worked really well on my skin was the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush it has micronized Amazonian clay particles which helps absorb the oils on the face which allows the blush to stay on longer. The claims for this product is that it stays on the skin for 12hours.  Which it does stay on for quite some time due to its unique formulation.

When it comes to applying cream blushes I found that the best way to apply it is with your fingers because applying it with a brush or a sponge can absorb most of the product. The best way to apply cream blush and to allow it to stay on all day is by setting it with either a translucent powder or a lightweight pressed powder.  By applying a translucent or a light pressed powder on top of the cream blush it will set the blush into place.

Gel formulation blushes are usually lip and cheek stains.  The stains do last a lot longer than an ordinary blush which is a pro. The one thing to keep in mind when it comes to gel blushes is to work with them fast because once it’s on the skin it sets and stains the skin. The best way to apply a gel blush is by using your fingers or with a stippling brush.  If the stippling brush ends up leaving any streak marks to go back in with your fingers.  A good example of a gel blush with good staying power is The Body Shops Cheek and Lip Stain. The good thing about gel formulations is that they are sheer and are buildable so you can build a natural to medium coverage blush that will last all day.

How To Make Your Highlighter Last All Day

Highlighting the face is a big trend in the makeup world. Highlighting actually brings your face features forward. Applying highlighter to the skin can give it more of a glow and can also give the illusion of making features stand out more. Now that we know it can do all sorts of wonders to the skin how do we get it to stay on all day and last.  I found with highlighters they mainly come in three different formulations liquid, cream, and powder.  Depending on the intensity of the look there are a few tricks and tips I use to keep my highlighter popping all day.

  1. using a primer with highlighter
  2. using strobing cream
  3. using cream highlighter plus a powder highlight
  4. using a setting spray

When applying a highlighter we all understand why it’s important to use a primer underneath our makeup because it will help keep the makeup in place.  So its always good to ensure we have a good primer under our makeup in order for the highlighter to stay put. A good face primer can keep most formulation intact all day.  Depending on the type of hand you use this can typically be a natural highlight.

Another cool technique I learned at MAC was to build that intensity is by using MACs strobe cream. A Strobe Cream has skin benefits similar to a moisturizer and also has micro pigments to help give the skins surface a nice glow.  MAC’s strobe cream can also work as a good highlighter base.  What I personally do is apply the Strobe Cream to my cheekbones or wherever I need to highlight my face and let it set. Then I go in with my powder highlighter and set the highlighter where I want it to be set.  This usually gives the highlight more of intensity because the strobe cream is the same color as the highlight. I found that this does have a long lasting power because it comes it’s like putting on two layers of highlight.  Keep in mind if you still want to apply a primer underneath these layers you still can make this all work.

The other trick I played around with was applying a cream highlighter and then setting it with a powder highlight.  What I usually do is take a cream highlight and blend it out with a beauty blender. Once the product is nicely evened out.  I apply a powder highlight on top of the cream highlight to set the highlight in place. Now, this also creates two layers of highlight which should also keep the highlighter in place all day.

The last trick to applying a more intense highlight is by applying the highlighter with a setting spray. A setting spray will bring out the intensity of the highlighter and change a powder highlighter into a more intense metallic high light. If your looking to achieve that blinding highlight look using a setting spray will achieve the look. The technique for this is to dampen your brush with setting such as MACs Fix Plus.  Then the brush and gently dip it into the powder highlight and gently stroke it onto the desired area on the face. Then go in with a beauty blender and smooth out the highlight. This way you will be able to build up the intensity of the product on your face.  The setting spray will provide the intensity and make the highlighter stay in place once it dries on the skin.

Waterproof Formulations For Your Eyebrows

When it comes to drawing those brow hairs there is nothing worse than it to fade off or smudge off during the day. There are a few ways to keep your brows into place and getting them to stay put. Through my extensive research, I have found three ways to keep those brows in place being using a waterproof brow pencil, setting the eyebrows with an eyebrow gel and lastly using brow primer.

The first thing to keep in mind is if your using a brow pencil make sure the formulation is waterproof so that once it settles into the skin it doesn’t budge. The one product I have in mind that does a really great job with its formulation is it Cosmetics Build A Brow which is a 5 in 1 Micro Fiber Crème Gel Stain.

When working with such a product you need to make sure you work with it quickly because once this type of product sets it won’t budge.  The brush that would work well with this is the recommended brush called the Heavenly Build A Brow Brush because it will allow you to work with the product and draw the perfect brow hairs with the brushes angled tip. There is no primer required when applying waterproof brow products. This is probably one of my more reliable formulations when it comes to waterproof brow products.

Brow Primers

A brow primer is really important to consider when using brow pencils and powders. The one that  I found made a huge difference is  Benefits Cosmetics Browvo Conditioning Primer.  This primer can change the way you look at your brow pencils it is usually used under the product. So once this gel-like formula is applied to the brow hairs It instantly gives the hairs a thicker and healthier look.

When used as a primer it allows your brow pencil or powder to last even longer. It also brings out the color and extends the wear.  It will take a lot of rubbing in order for your eyebrows to come off with a brow primer. Its good to have such a product at hand because it’s a two in one product that can either polish your eyebrow hairs into place or be used as a brow primer.

Gel

It Cosmetics has a  Brow Power Pomade which can be used to set eyebrow hairs into place along with applying on top of a powder or pencil brow product. When I was first learning about makeup I was taught to apply the brow powder on the eyebrows and then set it with a clear gel. In this case, the clear gel does the same thing it sets the product in place making it waterproof which is ideal for oily skin types.  The key here is to make the products become waterproof by adding a Pomade or clear gel product to set everything into place.

How To Make Your Mascara Last Longer

There is nothing worse than having beautiful eye makeup and having mascara smudge off throughout the day.  Sometimes depending on the formulation of the mascara it can flake during the day or start smearing off on the sides. There are a few tips and tricks I have been able to experiment with and found that kept my mascara lasting all day.

Using A Lash Primer

The one product that made a world of a difference to my mascara application was using a lash primer. I have spoken about this in the past and found that Loreals Volumous lash primer. The primer is applied like mascara before mascara application. This particular primer adds volume to the lashes and keeps the mascara on the eyelashes throughout the day. This will help particularly if you have a problem with mascara flaking off. The formulation is sticky enough to get the mascara to adhere on to it.

How To Make Your Mascara Waterproof

Having your mascara waterproof is also another way to get your mascara to stay put all day. When its waterproof the formulation is more sticky on the eyelashes. The real question is what if your mascara doesn’t come in a waterproof formulation? It’s easy to make your mascara waterproof. There are two things you need

  1. Your favorite Mascara
  2. Any waterproof mascara

In order to make your favorite mascara waterproof, all you need to do is two simple steps.  First, apply 1 to two coats of your favorite mascara and once that is semi-dry apply the waterproof mascara on top of your favorite mascara.  By applying the waterproof mascara on top of your favorite mascara it seals the mascara into place and automatically makes it waterproof.

Lastly, the ultimate trick I found that solved my smudging mascara and eyeliner was by reducing the oils around my eye area. Every time when I used to moisturize I always use to apply eye cream around my eye area. What this did was it caused a lot of oil in that area and anytime I wore mascara it was bound to smudge.  I eventually read up on how to prevent my mascara from smudging and found that a translucent powder helped majorly absorb the oils produced in that area.

Therefore, after applying my moisturizer I usually go in with a translucent powder like the Coty Airspin Face Powder and apply it around the eye area after mascara application with a light hand. This is usually enough to absorb any oils that may be sitting on the skin which was causing the breakdown of my mascara and caused all that smudging. This trick works well with the top lids as well epically if you have hooded eyes and your lids get oily often this will definitely give keep your mascara on for a lot longer.

How To Get Your Eyeliner To Last All Day

Eyeliner is a product I have to have on my eyes every single day. Without eyeliner, I don’t feel like myself.  Over the many years through trial and error, I found which eyeliner worked best for me along with tips and tricks on how to keep my eyeliner on longer. There are found types of eyeliners one being powder, gel, pencil, and liquid eyeliners. Each of these eyeliners plays a different role and can help keep your eyeliner lasting long all day without fading or smudging.

Powdered eyeliner also is known as cake eyeliner can either be used dry or wet. If used wet it has a tendency of lasting a lot longer on the eyelids A good example of this is MAC’s eyeshadow in Carbon.

Gel eyeliners usually are a gel-like texture and when applied they give the appearance of a liquid eyeliner due to its intense pigmentation. This type of eyeliner is usually applied with an angled brush. It can be applied to the top lid and the lower waterline. The one I use on a regular basis is IT Cosmetics Liner Love in the color Black. This gel eyeliner is waterproof and seriously doesn’t budge once it sets into the skin.

Pencil eyeliner is an eyeliner that looks exactly like a pencil and allows you to build your eyeliner with gentle strokes. It can be used on both the top eyelid and the bottom waterline. The one I personally use all the time is Estee Lauders Double Wear Stay in Place Eyeliner in Onyx.  This eyeliner has a  great formulation when it comes to staying power on the top lid and on the bottom waterline. It doesn’t fade for hours.

Liquid eyeliner has more precision its usually used to create a sharp crisp eyeliner look. Liquid eyeliner has the most intense in pigmentation.  It’s used on the top lid.  The one that I use every day is Estee Lauders Little Black liner in the color Black. This formulation stays put all day its waterproof, smudge proof and flake proof.

Look For A Long-Wearing Formulation

The one thing to look for when purchasing any eyeliner is to make sure the formulation is smudge proof and waterproof. This will determine the staying power of the eyeliner.  A way to test a waterproof eyeliner is by applying it to the back of your hand and allowing it to settle into the skin. After five mins when the product has fully dried rub and tugs at the product if it smudges then you know the quality of the product. The eyeliners I have mentioned above are all long-wearing formulations which have lasted long on me all day.

Use Powders

Another way to keep your eyeliner put is by using a translucent powder all over the eye area.  The moisture from your eye area can cause the formulation of your eyeliner to break down which can create smudging of the eyeliner. The best thing to do is reduce the oil production in that area by applying a light layer of translucent or pressed powder. The powder will absorb most of the oils preventing the eyeliner from breaking down.

Layering Products

Over the years I learned that in order to get my eyeliner to stay put I found that layering the eyeliner worked in keeping the eyeliner on for much longer. What I personally do is apply the liquid liner on the top lid and I usually wait for that to dry. Once its dry I usually go in with my pencil liner on top just to give it that extra layer of liner. On my waterline I use the pencil liner to line the waterline I let that settle in for a  minute, then I dip that same pencil liner into my gel liner and line the waterline with the gel liner. Lastly, to seal everything in I take an angled brush and use my cake liner to seal in my liner in the waterline. I found that this technique has always kept my eyeliner lasts all day.   By layers products, it builds the intensity of the eyeliners and gives it extra staying power.

How To Make Your Lipstick Last Long All Day

Lips

Another product that I cannot leave the house without is lipstick. The issue I have had with lipstick is that it never seemed to have stayed put. Over the years I have learned various formulations that have worked for me and that have been long lasting on me all day.

Prep the lips

It’s always a good idea to give your lips a bit of loving. Make sure lips are always exfoliated so that you have a smooth canvass to work with. If the lips are dry and chapped you will find that your lipstick won’t last as long and that lipstick will be prone to flaking off.  Just like have the perfect canvass for your face it works the same way with your lips. Make sure your lips are exfoliated and hydrated before applying any lipsticks on. A really good lip exfoliator is The Body Shops Exfoliating Lip Scrub. This particular lip scrub scrubs off dead skin cells and moisturizes the lips at the same time giving them a soft refined feel.   If lips are extra dry then it’s wise to apply a lip balm such as The Body Shops Moisturizing Lip Balm. This will give your lips the hydration it needs and preps it for the next step of lipstick application.

Waterproof lipliner

A good waterproof lip liner can really make your lipstick last. Lipliners are usually supposed to be the same color as your lipstick.  The waterproof formula is usually long-lasting and helps the lipstick adhere to the lipliner.  A lipliner gives definition to the lips and can give the illusion that lips are fuller.  By applying lipstick on top of a lip liner it right away creates two layers of color.  Because the lip liner is waterproof it will be harder to smudge and smear off which will give your lipstick longer longevity. Matte lipsticks usually have a longer staying power compared to the different formulas out on the market the reason being is because matte lipsticks don’t have much moisture in them which means the finish is usually drier.

Stains

Lip stain works well when the lips are hydrated an exfoliated. Lip stains usually sink into the first layer of the skin on the lips to give that stained look.  I personally found with lip stains that I had to layer them on to get more pigmentation to stain the lips if I wanted more of medium coverage. Otherwise, a lip stain will give a lighter coverage.  The great thing with lip stains is that they do last a good couple of hours now depending on the quality of the lip stain it can last pretty much all day and work well through eating and drinking meals.

Liquid Lipsticks

Liquid lipsticks have become one of the most popular lipsticks today.  The pigmentation is like a bullet lipstick but in a liquid form.  A lot of formulas are long wearing and usually don’t require any lip liner.  Once these formulas dry on the lips they have a longer staying power because they dry matte and don’t have any oils which will help keep the lipstick on for longer periods of time.

Setting Sprays

Now that all your makeup up is done,  the last step to really keep everything into place is by using a setting spray. Setting sprays really help set the makeup and help keep everything put into place.

It especially makes the biggest difference when you set your makeup with a setting powder and find it look cakey a setting spray will help get rid of that cakey look. Setting sprays also keep your makeup budge proof so that there is no smudging of your makeup and stays set. A setting spray will keep your makeup in place, check out this setting spray that I use and would recommend using.

Depending on the type of finish you’re looking for in your overall face there are two types of finishes with setting sprays a matte finish which is ideal for photography or a dewy finish which has more of a glowing finish to the skin. Matte finishes would be ideal for skin types that are oily and a more dewy finish is more for skin types that are dry or mature skin types.
