Identify Your Skin Type
Identify your skin type. There are three main skin types out there Normal/Combination skin, Dry Skin and Oily Skin. When the skin is secreting more oils than usual dry skin isn’t really affected as much its manly normal/combo skin and oily skin types. When it comes to makeup application it is important to understand your skin type. The right formulation in products can make a huge difference in the way your make up will look all day.
Normal Skin – usually has a bit of dry and oily textures. The “T-zone” which is the forehead, nose and the chin is usually oily. Whereas the cheeks and under eye area are drier and can even be flaky. It’s important to focus on products help with pH- balances with the skin. Using certain products with oil enriched absorbers can help with the oily “T-zone”.
Oily skin – when your skin has excess oil its called sebum. Oily skin types are identified by oil secretion after a few hours of washing the face. The “T-zone” is where all the oil glands are and where most of the oil is secreted these areas are the forehead, nose and chin area. Oily skin is usually identified by having a greasy, oily, shiny look to the face. In other words, the face constantly looks wet or sweaty all the time.
Furthermore, if your skin is oil using products without oil absorbers can age the appearance of your skin by drawing attention to the facial texture of the skin such as enlarged pores and uneven skin. This is why it’s important to start focusing on products that are made for oily skin types.
Cleanse The Skin
Cleansing the skin is an important step in our daily routines. The reason being is because when we cleanse our skin we removed all the excess dirt, oils and makeup on our face. This should be done twice a day once in the morning and the second time at night. If the oils aren’t cleansed from the face properly it can clog the pores and cause acne.
When it comes to Normal/Combination skin- it’s important to find a cleanser that is targeted this skin type so that the skin is cleansed, and pH-level can be restored with the cleansers.
When it comes to Oily Skin Types – it’s important to look for cleansers that are oil-free because again you don’t want an excess build up of oils to clog the pores only to create further skin problems such as acne or blackheads. A product such as The Body Shops Seaweed Deep Cleansing Gel Face Wash. This face wash is suitable for Combination and Oily Skin Types. Minerals are infused with seaweed which can help restore the balance and control keeping the skin cleansed and mattified
Tone The Skin
The purpose of toning the skin is to make sure that all the excess oil and dirt that wasn’t picked up by the cleanser gets removed properly by the toner. Toners also help keep the pH level of the skin balanced.
Normal/combination skin – when it comes to toners for normal/combination skin it does help remove remaining oils and dirt and restores the pH level which is something normal/combination skin needs. Sometimes toners help with removing any dead skin on the surface of the skin.
Oily skin – Toners work really well with oily skin types where it does also remove excess oils and dirt. This defiantly helps with oil control.
Use The Right Moisturizer For Your Skin Type
It’s easy to say wear a moisturizer but its always important to find the correct moisturizer for your specific skin type. A moisturizer can help balance the oils in the skin and even out the moisture levels throughout the skin. Even during the hottest time of the year its important wear a moisturizer because it can not only help balance out the skin it can also help with oil control depending on what skin type your moisturizer is made for.
Normal/combination skin – even during the hottest time of the year moisturizers are important to wear they can provide the correct amount of SPF and help with UVA/UVB rays. On normal/combination skin the moisturizer can help even out dry spots on the skin which helps give the who canvass a smooth finish.
Oily Skin- many people feel that they don’t need to wear a moisturizer and that it may add to the oil secretion of the skin. The truth is it’s still important for oily skin types to wear a moisturizer. The moisturizer can help keep the skin oil-free due to the formulation of the moisturizer. Formulation of oil-free moisturizers usually helps balance the skin oil levels.
Mattifying Primer
Mattifying primer is usually ideal for oily skin types. Primers can either be worn a lot for that matte finish look which gets rid of shine on the face. Sometimes primers can help give the illusion of smaller pores and change the texture of the skin. Oily skin types are more likely to have larger pores. Primers are also usually worn before foundation to help the longevity of the foundation.
Therefore, wearing a matte primer under a foundation can help eliminate the overproduction of sebum and will leave the skin looking less shiny while also keeping it soft and matte finish.
Tinted Moisturizers
Tinted moisturizers usually have a little color. It’s the sheerest coverage compared to all the foundations. Its almost wearing next to nothing on the skin and usually just evens out the skin tone. It usually has a good amount of SPF to protect the skin from any sun damage. It would be wise to look for Tinted moisturizers that are oil free which helps control the oil production.
During the summer months, oil-free formulations work on both normal/combination skin and oily skin types because it doesn’t add any additional oils to make the skin shiny or even more oily.
Nowadays there are two categories Tinted moisturizers fit in which is:
BB creams– which stands for Beauty Balms. Which usually give light coverage that can be built to full coverage. During summer it’s wise to use a light amount of this type of foundation. Always look for a BB Cream that is oily skin or oil free. BB creams are usually high in SPF which is good for protecting skin that is prone to burning in the sun and usually have a lot of other benefits like helping with redness and blemishes.
.CC creams– stands for color corrective cream. This is usually correcting the skin tones due to the color corrective formulation. It gets rid of the redness and unevenness of the skin. It can be a light to medium coverage depending on the brand you go for. The SPF is usually high with CC creams as well. Again it’s important to go for an oil-free formulation so that there is no further sebum secretion.
Set Eyelids And The Under Eyes With A Powder
When it comes to making the eyelids less oily the best thing to do is Set eyelids and the under eyes with a powder, gently dab a very light layer of powder on the face nothing too heavy. This additional step will help any eye make up stay on longer because the powder will absorb all the oils.
Waterproof Mascara
When it comes to mascara lasting long on the eyes the best type of mascara is waterproof mascara. Due to the formulation of waterproof mascara, it has the ability to adhere to the lashes due to its special formulation. There should be less smudging smearing.
Waterproof Eyeliner
One of the most important formulations when it comes to eyeliner is for it to be waterproof. Waterproof eyeliner usually lasts a lot longer than normal eyeliners. Once they are set they are a lot harder to smudge and fade off and stay on pretty long all day.
Tinted Blushes (Cheek Stains)
Tinted blushes are ideal to use during the summer time. On oilier skin, it won’t come off as much. The staying of cheek stains lasts pretty much all day. When it comes to applying cheek stains you need to work fast with it because they are usually a liquid/gel-like formulation. The reason being is because it sets very fast once it settles into the skin and gives it a bit of a stain.
It usually is light and gives the skin a natural glow. Therefore, after putting a few drops of the stain on your cheeks blend it into the skin right away. A good example of this The Body Shops Lip and Cheek Stain
Lip Stains
Lip stains are also a great addition to sweatproof makeup. The same way a cheek stain stains the lips is the same way it works with being a lip stain. It gives the lips a natural flush of color and is a lightweight formula. When applying a lip stain it usually stains the lips giving it longer lasting power. If the product is usually a lip and cheek stain it solves the problem of finding the perfect lip color and blush color to match!
Setting Spray
Setting spray is usually the last step of makeup application. This usually sets the makeup and keeps it in place. To avoid having more oily skin its best to go for a setting spray that is a “Matte Finish”. The Matte finish would make your skin have less oil therefore there won’t be any shine on the skin. Setting sprays usually are used to help make up look less cakey. It usually brings liveliness back to the skin. An example of this kind of setting spray is NYX Professional make up setting spray and another example would be the MAC prep and Prime Fix Plus.
Blotting Papers
Always keep blotting papers at hand. Blotting papers usually work well before applying makeup and throughout the day when there is a lot of oil secretion. Blotting papers usually absorb the oils sitting on top of the skin giving it a matte finish to eliminate the shine. Many cosmetic brands have different types of blotting papers that can help target various skin concerns such as blotting paper infused with tea tree oil to help eliminate acne.
Some blotting papers do have slight powder on them to help absorb the oils on the skin. Therefore, if you have oily skin and you blot your skin prior to make up the application it can make a difference in how your make up will apply. During the day its good to have on hand so if any further secretion of oils arise in the skin it helps temporary get rid of the oil and shine on the face.
Adding this one step to your daily routine will make a difference in how your make up applies and how long it lasts throughout the day. You will find our make up is less likely to smear off because this helps reduce the oil secretion.
Oil-Free Makeup Remover
When it comes to makeup removers I found that they come in for various skin types nowadays. There are makeup removers that contain oils which are supposed to help remove makeup that stains or long wearing make up which is usually suitable for normal to combination and dry skin types whereas the products that are oil-free are suitable for oily skin types.
Their reason why makeup removers are part of waterproof makeup is that it does matter what type of makeup remover you are using. A makeup remover with a lot of oils can change your skin. A makeup remover with more oil in it can make skin more oil the next day. If it’s a hot summer and the humidity factor is high and if you use a makeup remover that is oil based the night before you will find your skin will be more oily therefore when you apply your makeup your skin is more oily than expected to make your make up less likely to last long and be waterproof all day.
If normal/combo skin types have this issue it would be worth trying this tip by using an oil free make up remover the night before. The makeup removers that come to mind is Garnier Micellar Water which comes from three skin types which are all skin types, sensitive skin type, and oily skin types.
Night Treatments
At the end of the day once your skin is cleansed and makeup-free it’s also very helpful to have nightly treatment intact. During the night time, our skin is recovering from the day. This is a good time to help our skin recover and rejuvenate for the following day. When it comes to moisturizing the skin we have to careful not to use the product that allows our skin to secrete lots of oil throughout the day.
A lot of serums help moisturize the skin and deliver moisture to the top layer of the skin. Serums can be used by itself or with a cream to deliver moisture to the skin. The one serum I found that worked well in delivering the sufficient amount of moisture to the skin and to help reduce oil from secreting was The Body Shop Seaweed Oil Control Overnight Mattifying Gel.
This has benefits to even combination skin types because the serum delivers moisture to any dry patches on the skin along with helping with oil control. Using such products can help prep the skin for the following day. Your skin will still be moisturized and oil free. The treatment is excellent for oily skin types and good for normal/combination skin during the summer time. Furthermore, the skin will be less oily allowing your makeup-less likely to melt off during the hot summer months.
In conclusion, it’s really important to identify your skin type. During the hot humid summer, months are skin more likely to change due to the climate. Oil-free products actually help control normal/combo skin during the summer months and help oily skin types throughout the year. It’s always important to make sure your skin has moisture in it because the purpose here is to keep skin looking healthy and not dehydrated.
From our skin care to the way we apply makeup can make a difference in how our face looks throughout the day. It’s important to also focus on products that have mattifying formulations so it reduces the shine on our skin. Products that are waterproof allow makeup to stay on our skin for longer periods of time due again due to the formulation but again it all boils down to skin care and the right types of products for our skin type.
