How To Make Your Lipstick Last All Day

When it comes to lipstick it has been around since 1200 BC. In the 1900s is when it became a part of a woman’s attire.  Over time many companies have come out with various colors and formulations.  Today, Estee Lauder and Loreal are two known companies dominate the lipstick market. Even during the recession, the sales of lipsticks are known to increase.  With so many colors and formulations to choose from,  lipsticks compliment a makeup and are a staple look for fashion.

Lipstick plays such importance to many women’s makeup looks. Therefore, it’s important to have it stay put all day.  There are many tricks and tips that can help the longevity of the lipstick last through any type of situation.  I have provided ten main tips that can surely keep your lipstick from smudging, fading and bleeding off during the day.

Exfoliate The Lips

1. Exfoliating the tips

When it comes to applying any type of lipstick it’s really important to prep the lips for any type of lipstick application. Exfoliation is the number one step this will ensure your lips don’t have dead skin sitting on it which can cause them to chap. This one step can change the way lipstick glides on to the lips and can make the texture of the lipstick work well for the lips.  When removing dead skin cells from the lips it’s important to use a gritty scrub such as a sugar scrub, this will help remove the dead skin cells of the lips and leave behind a smooth surface.  To maintain this smoothness its also important to apply a lip balm. Let the lip balm sink into the lips so that lips stay moisturized.  Some good products to help with this step is using Lushes Bubble Gum Sugar Scrub and applying Chapstick right after. A two in one product is The Body Shops Lip Scuff which comes in a lipstick bullet form and uses seeds to help remove dead skin cells and has moisturizing properties that work exactly like a lip balm to help moisturize the lips once the products are wiped off.

DIY Exfoliation for your lips

Step 1– get a clean toothbrush

Step 2– apply coconut oil on the toothbrush

Step 3– gently scrub away dead skin cells with the toothbrush using a circular motion

Step 4– wipe off any excess product with a tissue, this point your lips should be both exfoliated and moisturized

A few tips to keep in mind for continuous supple lips

  • Drink lots of water
  • Avoid licking the lips consistently
  • Keep a humidifier in the room
  • Apply lip balm instead of petroleum jelly because petroleum jelly suffocates the skin
  • Wear SPF lip balms during sunny periods to protect the skin

Using a Lip primer

2. Using a lip primer for your lipstick to stay on longer

After the lips have been exfoliated the next tip is to look at a lip primer. The purpose of lip primers is so that the lipstick can stay on longer so that less fading occurs. Lip primers help with the bleeding and feathering of lipstick. Lip primers also help smooth out any lines on the lips and give the lips a healthier look. They usually are usually clear in color and some feel a bit tackier when applied to the lips which allow the lipstick to adhere to the lips giving it a longer lasting lip color.

Some suggested lip primers are: Colour Pop Lippie Primer Lippie Stix, Urban Decays Lip Primer Potion and MAC’s Prep + Prime

Lip primers are usually applied before lipstick application. If you want to avoid wearing lipliner lip primers would be ideal as they will have similar benefits as a lip liner. Applying the lip primer will help with the lipsticks longevity, prevent fading, bleeding and feathering.

Step one– exfoliate the lips

Step two– apply lip balm and let it settle into the lips for a few mins

Step three – apply a lip primer

Step four – apply lipstick on top of the lip primer

Using  A Lipliner

3. Use a lip liner to help the lipstick stay longer

After the lips have been prepped for lipstick most people look at applying lipliner because it helps lipstick to stay on longer and prevents the lipstick from feathering and bleeding.  Lip liners are usually used to also help define the lip or it can be used to fill the entire lip.  It’s important to look at the formulation of lipliners try to go for waterproof lip liners.  Lipliners also help enhance the color of a lipstick or can change the color of a lipstick. It’s important to find a lipliner that is the same color as the lipstick so that it can help bring out the color of the lipstick color.

When applying lipliner it’s important to find your cupids bow to start defining the lip shape and to use the rest of your mouth as a guide to line the lips and color in the rest of the lips with the lip liner. This creates the perfect base for your lipstick to stick onto.  Depending on the formulation of the lip liner it can leave a stain behind throughout the day giving your lips a slight color.  Applying lip liner defiantly helps the lipstick adhere to the lips longer. A waterproof formulation makes it harder for the lipstick and lip liner to come off.

A good waterproof lipliner worth trying out is Urban Decays 24/7 lipliner this formulation usually glides on the lips smoothly and lasts for a long time due to its waxy formulation.

Clear Lip Pencil

4. Usually waterproof which helps the lipstick

Clear lip pencils are very common with many makeup brands. The formulation is usually waterproof which helps the lipstick last longer on the lips.  The purpose of a clear lip pencil is to avoid feathering, bleeding and fading of your lip color.  The difference between a lip liner and a clear lip liner is it cancels out the work of trying to find the right lip liner and gives you the benefits of contouring and shaping your lips.  It also acts as a lip primer is clear in color. Clear Lip Pencils are used before the application of lipstick. It works out to be a good two in one product of both a lip liner and a lip pencil.  This product is excellent for people who are new to applying lipstick and want to avoid wearing colored lip liners.

Textured Lipsticks

5. The longevity of your lip color

There are many lipstick formulations out on the market that play a role in the longevity of your lip color.  There are seven textures of lipsticks out there in the market currently which are:  Gloss, Satin, Frost, Cream, Liquid, Gel and Matte. The finishes on each of these textures can determine how long the lipstick will last on your lips.

Lip Glosses–  have a high shine and give the lips a lot of fullness and are not so long lasting

Satin– is light coverage and consistently need touch ups due to its moisturizing formulations

Frost finishes–  are usually highly pigmented and have micro  glitter reflectivity properties and have medium wear in longevity

Cream– are usually high in pigmentation and have high moisturizing properties which make you have consistent touch-ups

Liquid– Are usually very high in pigmentations and are matte finishes which have a waterproof formulation and last all day

Matte– is usually highly pigmented and has no shine and has a longer staying power than most lipsticks finishes

When applying matte lipsticks, it is best used with a lip brush. Applying matte lipsticks straight from the tube can be harder to apply directly due to the rough formulation.  Its easier to layer matte lipsticks with a lip brush.  Matte lipsticks usually stay longer on the lips and have a tendency of leaving a stain on the lips.

How to  apply Matte lipsticks

Step 1 – Exfoliate the lips and make sure all dead skin is removed because matte lipsticks can accentuate the dry texture of dried lips and the lipstick will end up peeling off faster

Step 2- Apply a lip balm to the lips and allow it to settle into the lips the reason being is because the matte lipstick formulations can dry out the lips.

Step 3- use a lip liner to fill in the lips, the lip liner should be the same color as your matte lipstick

Step 4- use a lip brush and apply the lipstick onto the lips

6. Using Liquid Lipsticks

For a while now most brands carry a liquid lipstick which is very long wearing. The formulation is not as drying and has a waterproof formula. Liquid lipsticks are supposed to be a lipstick but in a liquid form but in a longer wearing formula which many companies provide.  When applying liquid lipsticks, they usually don’t need a lipliner unless you want to define the lips more.  Again, it’s important to prep the lips keeping them exfoliated and hydrated before applying a liquid lipstick otherwise it can look unflattering and stick to the dryness of the lips making your lips look more flakey therefore keep that in mind.  The waterproof formulation makes the product kiss proof and budge-proof.

7. Using Lip Stains

Another great formulation is lip stains. Lip stains are usually long lasting and don’t really budge if they are left on the lips long enough to stain them. They have a very natural look. It gives the same kind of look a pop sickle would after eating it and it leaves a stain of color on the lips. With lip stains, a lot of beauty companies cater the product as a multi-use for both the cheeks and the lips. They are worth trying out as they won’t dry out the lips as much. The staying power on lip stains is about a couple of hours. This is great to have in your hand if your going on to lunch and don’t want to touch up too much it can survive through most meals.   The two brands that come are The Body Shops Cheek and Lip stain and Benefit Cheek and Lip Stain.

8. Using Lip Toppers

Lip toppers are usually applied after lipstick application.  Its known to change the finish of your lipstick, making it brighter and giving the lips a metallic or three-dimensional look. Lip toppers allow your lipstick to be custom made to you and you only because you can determine what lipstick looks beautiful on you and you can enhance the lipstick by adding a lip topper.  Lip toppers work best on top of matte lipsticks.  It’s also important to look at the formulation of lip toppers in order to determine the longevity of the lipstick.  Therefore, when purchasing a lip topper look for a formulation that is waterproof.  Waterproof formulas will seal the lip color underneath the lip topper allowing the lipstick to be waterproof and giving your lipstick some dimension, budge-proof and give it extra longevity.  A lip topper to consider is  Urban Decays  Vice Special Effects Long Lasting Water-Resistant Lip Top Coat which comes in 12 shades which are all metallic.

9. Using Concealers

Concealers are used not only to conceal blemishes but can also be used on the lip as a base. After exfoliating and moisturizing the lips the next step is to add a concealer all over the lips.  The concealer will help the lipstick stay on longer throughout the day and all bring out the brightness of lipstick color. Using concealer can benefit people who have highly pigmented lips that change the color of the lipstick, the concealer neutralizes the pigmentation on the lips allowing the lipstick true color to come through.  Concealer is also one of the oldest tricks in the books that can help enhance a lip shape.  After applying the concealer to the lips lip liner is still needed to help define and help enhance a lip shape.  After applying the lipliner then lipstick is used to apply all over the lips.  The concealer can be used to clean up any smudging that may have occurred during lipstick application around the mouth if needed.

Translucent Powder

10. Using  A Translucent powder to set your lipstick

Translucent powders are usually used to set makeup and to make sure it doesn’t move around. Your translucent powder can also be used to set your lipstick in place to prolong the longevity of it. As we now know matte finishes are one of the more long formulations to look for when choosing lipsticks.  Does the question now arise what if your favorite lipstick color doesn’t come in a matte finish?  This is where translucent powders come into play.  Translucent powders usually absorb any excess oil so when applying a translucent powder to a moisturizing lipstick it removes all the oils from the lipstick making the lipstick a matte finish. There is a special technique used to make your lipstick a matte finish this is also known as sealing in the lipstick.

How to make your lipstick matte

Step 1- exfoliate and moisturize the lips

Step 2- Apply the lipliner to desired shape and color in the lips

Step 3- Blot the Lips

Step 4- Apply your favorite moisturizing lipstick

Step 5- blot the lips

Step 6 take a piece of bathroom tissue paper and peel off one layer of the tissue paper making it a thin layer of tissue paper and hold it up against your lips and apply translucent powder through the tissue on to the lips (this extra step should set the lipstick into place absorbing all the oils out of it and be making your lipstick into a matte finish)

Layering the Lipstick

11. Layering the correct formulations for long-lasting lipstick

Knowing the different tips we now know we can apply and layer the correct formulations in order to have long lasting lipstick throughout the day.  We now know that exfoliating and moisturizing the lips are vital and help prep the lips before lipstick application.

Secondly, we know applying a waterproof lipliner helps the longevity of our lipstick because it adheres to the lipliner. Applying a lip stain on top of the lip liner can give an additional boost in our lip color because of its staying power.  If the lip stain is creamy then we need to apply some translucent powder to mattify our lip color.

After that is applied we can then either go in with another color similar to the matte lipstick for another additional layer. Then blot the lipstick and this should give your lipstick long wear throughout the day or even night.  There will defiantly be an additional color left over even after the greasiest of meals. This tip is worth trying on a long night out.
