How To Make Your Lipstick Transfer Proof

When it comes to lipstick it’s well known to be the signature finish to many makeup looks.  There is nothing worse than having an evening out and having a beautiful makeup look only to find out that it faded away or smeared off. The one thing I always have disliked was having to reapply lipstick to my lips every hour on an evening out.  Eventually through trail and error  I was able to find a few ways to make my lip lipstick transfer proof.

1. Exfoliating The Lips

The first thing to always remember before applying lipstick is to exfoliate the lips. It’s really important to exfoliate the lips because it removes any dead skin cells or any dried texture from the lips.  If the lipstick is applied on top of your dried skin you will find that it will come off the lips, because the texture from the lips wont allow it to stay on, in fact the lipstick may just flake off.

In order to exfoliate the lips it’s best to use a lip scrub. A common lip scrub would usually be a sugar scrub which uses the grains of the sugar to scrub off dead skin cells off the lip, that’s why it’s really important to get rid of any textures on the lips so it doesn’t effect the lipstick application, by avoiding this step it makes your lipstick more prone to coming off.

2. Moisturize The Lips

After exfoliating the lips it’s good to apply a moisturizer to the lips. This will help keep the lips hydrated and plumped, by adding a lip balm to the lips helps any lip color to apply smoother. It’s an good idea to apply lipstick or any lip color after a few minutes so that the moisturizer sets in to the lips properly. Make sure you wipe off any excess lip balm before applying any lipstick on, this also makes the lipstick formulation feel more comfortable through out the night.

3. Waterproof Liner

When applying the lipstick the next step is to apply a waterproof lip liner. Waterproof lipliners usually have a longer longevity. A lot of the lip liner formulations have a more tacky feel which help lipsticks adhere  better to the lips.

Lipliners also help define the lips and help the lipstick application have more precision, by applying a lipliner before your lipstick it does add an additional layer of lipstick. When you do apply a lipliner always make sure that both the lipliner and lipstick match, this is so that there is an additional layer under your lipstick.

4. Lip Primers

Lip primers help the lipstick last longer to the lips.  Lip primers can be a substitute if a lip liner isn’t available. Similar to a lipliner, lip primers help your lipstick adhere to the lips, It also has a tacky feel and fills in any lines and crevasses on the lips which allow the lipsticks to apply on more smoother. Lip primers usually go on clear so it wont change the color of the lipstick, by adding this step before applying lipstick it will help the lipstick last longer making it more transfer proof.

5. Blotting The Lips

Blotting the lips: It’s really important to blot the lips with tissue in between applying layers. This will help remove any excess product on the lips, when blotting in between layers this allows the lipstick to lock  into place.

6. Layering Lipstick

When it comes to applying lipstick and making the lipstick transfer proof the best way to make your lipstick have more longevity, is by layering the product.  The more layers of lipstick applied to the lips the more longer the longevity of the lipstick.

The way to layer your lipstick is by applying one layer of the lipstick on to the lips and then blotting it off with tissue paper, and then applying a second layer of lipstick on top.

Always make sure to blot the lips in between the second layer, by using a piece of tissue to blot off any excess lipstick, this will remove the lipstick that was more likely to transfer off first.

When you do add a second layer of lipstick to the lips it adds more color and also replaces the color that came off during the blotting of the lipstick.

7. Formulations

What is transfer proof lipstick?

Transfer proof lipsticks are usually longer lasting in formulation. These types of formulations usually are matte and have no glossy finish to them. A lot of these long wearing lipsticks can last upto 8 hours and can also be known as liquid lipsticks.

With long lasting formulations they are more likely to stay in place once it sets into the skin. Some long wearing lipsticks also provide the lips with a lip stain making these types of formulations transfer proof.

When it comes to lipstick formulations it’s very important to consider longer lasting formulations.  It’s really important to stay away from gloss formulations and cream formulations, this is due to the high moisture content that it will help transfer quicker.

The best formulations to go for are matte formulations which usually have a lot less moisture content which will allow the lipstick to last longer and will less likely transfer. Matte formulations usually have a stronger pigmentation which will come more true to color than a lip-gloss would.

How to make your lipstick matte:

For lipsticks that have a more lustre finish (cream lipsticks) there is a way to make these types of a lipstick have a matte finish. Matte lipsticks have a longer wear time and are less likely to smudge off the lips.

Follow the steps below to create a matte lipstick:

Step 1: Apply the lipstick onto the lips

Step 2: Blot the excess color on to a piece of tissue paper

Step 3: Apply another layer of lipstick

Step 4: Apply a bit of translucent powder on top of the lips (this will help absorb all the moisture and will help the lipstick become more of a matte finish)

Lip Stains: Lip stains are usually transfer proof. These types of lipsticks aren’t as opaque as a matte lipstick, Instead, they stain the lips more, giving the lips more of a natural looking color.  Lip stains will last longer and wont budge, which makes them more transfer proof.  Lip stains should also be applied in layers if you want more pigmentation.

Liquid lipsticks: Are another form of lipsticks but in a liquid format. Liquid lipsticks are usually long lasting in formulation and are highly pigmented. They also have a matte finish which allows the lipstick to last longer throughout the day. The formulation is usually budge proof because it grabs on to the lips and dries down the matte.

8. Applying Concealers

Concealers: Sometimes depending on the formulation of the lipstick you may find that it may bleed outside of the lip line, this will cause the transfer. The best thing to do is apply concealer outside the lip line so that the lipstick wont bleed, this will also help give your lipstick a crisper and cleaner look.

9. Avoid Having Oily Substances

Another tip to make your lipstick last longer and to be completely transfer proof, is by avoiding applying anything that would be oil based on top of your lipstick. When you apply oil-based products to the lipstick it will break down the formulation and make your lipstick come off. That is why it’s best to avoid applying glosses on top of the lips and glosses that are oily.  Another thing to remember is if you do eat oily foods your lipstick no matter how long lasting it is, will break down making it transfer off.

10. Use The Lollipop Trick

When dealing with more of a glossy formulation of lip color the best way to removed excess lip color off the lips is by using the lollipop trick. The lollipop trick is when you have your lips in a n “o shape” this then requires you put your index finger in your mouth and close it. You then pull out your finger and this will remove any excess lip color that was transfer proof that may be residing on the inside of your lipsl

When it comes to making your lipstick transfer proof there are a lot of ways to make it transfer proof. It’s a must to exfoliate the lips so that there is no transfer of color through the texture of the lipstick.

It’s a good idea to always make sure that lips are well moisturized before applying any other lip products to the lips, by having a base whether it be a lip liner or a lip primer, to make any lip color applied on top to adhere to the lips.  Next, when applying a lip color look at long wearing formulations such as liquid lipsticks or matte formulations.  Try to avoid any glossy formulations as they will glide off due to the higher moisture content.

During application of layering lipstick it’s wise to blot the lips with a piece of tissue paper so it removes any excess lipstick that would transfer, by blotting the lipstick off it also helps seal in any remaining lipstick.

Lastly, to change or to make the lipstick formulation last longer, apply a translucent powder on top of the lips, this will help the lipstick stay in place.
